The Monodesign interior architecture office is located on the ground floor of an apartment building on one of the leafy streets of Alsancak — the central district of İzmir. The 80 m² office had been used as a residence before being turned into its current form.
Before beginning the design, the functions and needs were analyzed in detail and a layout scheme was developed to bring out the best potential of this small-scale area. The office consists of 5 main volumes: the entrance area (exhibition area, cloakroom, WC and material library), the meeting area, the kitchenette area, the executive office, and the design room conceived as a shared workspace. Differences in the floor materials, semi-open metal separators and glass partitions played an important role in defining the boundaries of these volumes. Care was taken to keep the transitions between volumes flowing and transparent. The office was designed so that the designers can stay in communication with each other while their personal areas remain defined. The kitchenette section, positioned at the center of the office, together with its island countertop and bookshelves, was turned into a shared area where employees can take a break and exchange ideas while leafing through magazines and books. This area, which became the common point of the design room, the executive office and the meeting room, in fact turned into a comfortable mini gathering space in itself.
The ideal of being unique and original — which forms the name and philosophy of Monodesign Interior Architecture — was reflected onto the space as well. From the work desks to the side tables and the separators, all furniture was custom produced. Material choices blended natural materials such as solid oak and marble with industrial materials such as painted metals, bronze lighting and acrylic, in a balanced harmony. As lighting elements, alongside custom-made metal and bronze fixtures, Foscarini and Artemide branded lighting fixtures were also used. As a result of the color and texture work suited to the design, the space took shape from a blend of natural oak tones, industrial gray tones and bronze, with warm vivid tones finding their place as small accents at critical points. Examples include the red refrigerator used in the kitchenette area, the orange table lamp and the plum-colored movable pouf in the executive office, and the custom-made yellow lighting on the shared work table.
The outcome is a compact yet fully functional, airy, original and elegant office area, made spacious through the careful positioning of spaces and the use of transparency.
